About this Event

In Manchester, 0% of stop and searches under section 60 Criminal Justice & Public Order Act lead to an arrest in April 2018-March 2019. While stop and search affects mainly young people in poorer communities across Manchester, there is evidence that it is also more likely to affect Black, Asian and other Minority Ethnic (BAME) people. For example,

  • If you are a black person, you are 9 times more likely to be stopped and searched than a white person in England.
  • Stop and search for Asian people has risen by +44%
  • Four percent of outcomes from searches under section 60 were linked to the initial reason for it taking place.

There is evidence that stop and search does not prevent crime well enough and drives up levels of mistrust in the police. It’s #TimeToTalk about racial injustice.

At EQUAL, an independent advisory group tackling the racial bias in the criminal justice system, improving outcomes for BAME people is a top priority. We want to start a meaningful conversation around widening disproportionality of Black and Muslim men that exists in our criminal justice system.

So join us on the 14th of January at Manchester MET for a lively panel discussion of leading academic (Patrick Williams), civil society (Roxy Legane, founder of Kids of Colour) and public sector representatives (Mayor Andy Burnham) tackle the issue of stop and search. You’ll have an opportunity to ask hard hitting questions to our panel of experts in our extended audience Q&A. So book your free ticket here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/timetotalk-unreasonable-suspicion-the-effects-of-stop-search-tickets-80017090271

We look forward to seeing you there.
