JRF Poverty and Ethnicity programme

In spring of 2011, Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) launched a new five year programme to increase the understanding of the relationship between poverty and ethnicity. They would use this to develop more effective ways of tackling poverty across all ethnic groups in the UK.

Phase 3 consists of four practical projects which build on evidence gathered through the programme so far and test out ways of tackling issues that have emerged.

BTEG is the strategic partner working with JRF on Phase 3 of the programme. Our role on the programme is to:

  • Assist JRF with selecting the demonstration projects – this took place between October and December 2015

  • Provide project support and advice to the demonstration projects

  • Monitor and review progress of projects

  • Support with project level evaluations and producing a summary level evaluation

  • Gather learning from across the projects and provide a forum to share with JRF, projects and external stakeholders throughout the life of the project

The four projects involved are:

Women Like Us who are focussed on supporting mothers in Lambeth in low income jobs into better jobs. They work with mums from Somali, Pakistani and Polish backgrounds whom they engage through existing channels such as sewing groups or mother and baby classes. Their support includes one to one tailored sessions to progress whilst already in a job.

Crisis Brent who work with residents within Harlesden, many from a minority ethnic background, to help them into better jobs. Through other projects they engage with employers and support people into employment, using JRF funding to provide services which enable those on the programme to progress to better jobs.

Mayor’s Fund for London supports young Londoners into sustainable careers, whilst improving diversity in the transport sector. Many young people on the project undertake a two week training programme called EPIC.  This includes CV writing, mock interviews and a Dragon’s Den pitching event, with employers with live vacancies looking to take on young people and progress them into careers within the transport sector.

Bradford Council is working to reduce poverty in Bradford by providing training and support to those working in, or thinking of working in, a range of sectors including textiles, manufacturing and working at the Council itself.
