Overview
The latest GCSE figures from the Department for Education (DfE) from 2009 suggest that only 50.7% of pupils are achieving the standard of 5+A*-C grades including Mathematics and English. This means that a staggering 49.3% of pupils are failing to reach this benchmark .While some pupils from ethnic backgrounds are doing well, a large percentage of pupils from BME groups are failing in our educational system.
For example, only 39.4% of Black Caribbean pupils achieve 5+ A*- C grades including English and Mathematics while 71.6% of Chinese pupils achieve 5+ A*- C grades including English and Mathematics in the same category.
There are many factors that could contribute to this stark and depressing picture that these figures paint. Research shows that low educational achievement for BME pupils can have a significant impact on future life chances and social mobility. This has to change.
BTEG provides a national voice for BME organisations and groups who are working to improve educational outcomes for BME children and young people. We have a successful track record as a BME organisation and have published numerous publications with great achievement.
BTEG addresses these issues on educational inequalities and seeks to improve the outcomes for BME children on a national level by:
-
Undertaking research on education issues for BME communities
-
Contributing to policy development
-
Promoting good practice in community education for BME young people
-
Facilitating networking and information exchange between community education providers
-
Supporting local groups to influence policy and strategy in their local areas
Sharing good practice and knowing the latest information in education is essential to improving the outcomes of BME children and young people. BTEG endeavours to give you the latest news and tools on BME education from around the UK.
All of BTEG’s work with schools, local authorities, community education providers and national organisations shows our active inclusion in providing an ongoing policy development voice to raise the educational attainment of Black and minority ethnic groups nationally.
Education Research
Research plays an important part in contributing to the equality of educational attainment. BTEG seeks to influence policies that improve the outcomes of BME children and young people through the research we undertake. Research provides us with evidence to pass on to national and regional bodies and local authorities about their policies and practices.
We use research to also apply for funding to support the development of our work.
The research we conduct give us a flavour of people's experiences and everyday lives when dealing with organisations that affect them and their families.
We work with universities to supervise and support students carrying out research projects on the experiences of Black and Minority Ethnic boys who have been excluded from school. Our research has examined the impact of supplementary schools on young peoples' examination results at GCSE and A Level. We have also researched how schools are carrying out their duty to promote community cohesion.
