To support BME organisations through this phase, BTEG has developed a Leadership and Development Programme.
The overall aim of the programme is to give BME civil society organisations:
- Support to reposition their organisations to take advantage of localism and Big Society opportunities.
- Opportunities to collaborate with local organisations with a similar remit and explore new partnerships for the benefit of the whole community.
- Understand and access resources from new funding streams to improve their sustainability.
- Enhanced their leadership skills
This challenging programme encourages you to explore and develop your leadership and management practice, through shared learning, reflection and facilitation.
Using Action Learning (learning by doing) as one of the tools, this facilitated programme offers participants the opportunity to explore major change issues, leading to reflection on, review and refinement of your leadership and management practice.
Action Learning is a simple but powerful process where groups of individuals, guided by a trained facilitator, meet on a regular basis to address challenges in a supportive but enquiring environment. Action Learning is a long-established and internationally recognised development method which has proven effectiveness in supporting beneficial change. Key features include:
- Working on real problems
- Learning by doing
- Sharing perspectives
- Implementing solutions - not ‘just talking’
- Encouraging questions and reflection.
The Action Learning sessions will look at topics/issues such as:
- Leading the Changing organisation
- Trends in government and policy
- Finding collaborations/partnerships
- HR – Staff management issues and staff development
- Optimise decision making and problem solving
- Communicating, pitching and negotiating effectively
- Dealing with difficult issues
- Understanding the importance of PR/Marketing
- Alternative sources of funding/contracts
- What will funders look for
- Innovation and enterprise
- Making resources work for you. (e.g. premises, local knowledge, access to community links)
The first round of the programme was launched in June 2011, with BME social enterprises from Islington,
