Press Release:

Time for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic organisations to shape the criminal justice system

A series of round table consultation events organised by BTEG and partner organisations

The disturbing over representation of BAME communities in the criminal justice system (CJS) must be reversed.

Nearly a third of male prison inmates are from BAME backgrounds.

BAME organisations play a key role in trying to make the criminal justice system fairer, responsive to diversity and reducing offending. The coalition government is undertaking a major programme of reform for the CJS and it’s critical that BAME voices are heard at the local and national level. BTEG is leading the delivery of a project to establish a national network of BAME organisations.

Jeremy Crook OBE, Director of BTEG said: ‘BTEG wants to work with other voluntary and community groups across the country to ensure that BAME-led initiatives that prevent crime, stop re-offending and support families are shared across the criminal justice system and expanded to other areas. We can only achieve this if those organisations providing these solutions join with us to create a strong voice and network. The Ministry of Justice has supported us to deliver this crucial objective’.

End.
