Leading Charity Urges Parents to Help Schools Tackle Race Inequalities

A new publication released today by the Black Training and Enterprise Group (BTEG) reveals the extent to which parents can play a key role in helping schools tackle race inequalities.

The guide Race Equality and Schools: A guide for Parents and Carers has been produced to help parents and carers to understand the responsibility that schools have under the new Equality Act 2010 to address race equality and suggests what parents can do to support schools to raise educational attainment.

Jeremy Crook OBE, Director of BTEG, said: ‘We hope that this guide will raise awareness and encourage parents and carers from all ethnic backgrounds to be more active on this important issue in the future. We think that the vast majority of parents are unaware of the legal duty schools have to address race equality and involve parents in the process.’

‘Many parents find it difficult to approach their children’s school to talk about issues such GCSE choices, their child’s aspirations, bullying and discrimination. We hope this guide will help parents and schools to feel more confident about dealing with these issues. This information is important for ethnic minority and white parents’
